So onto the next task...
Alongside this, he shows us the progression of Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 through examples:
So although being a simple and effective tool for us to use in everyday life. The 'behind the scenes' of Web 2.0 are quite complicated and are still progressing every day.
I'll admit when I first read through this task I had absolutely no idea what it was. We were asked to look into 'Web 2.0' and I had never heard of it! I thought it was something I would have to download to help me with my studies. I was kind of correct. It would help me with my studies, and my career, but I realised I am already using Web 2.0 as I speak!
So 'What is Web 2.0?'
I found this explanation from the Discovery Education website which I think sums it up quite nicely:
"Web 2.0 is about revolutionary new ways of creating, collaborating, editing and sharing user-generated content online. It's also about ease of use. There's no need to download, and teachers and students can master many of these tools in minutes. Technology has never been easier or more accessible to all."
Web 2.0, is this blog! It's social networking sites, it's wiki's. It's basically about you becoming the user and you having your input on the internet. Sharing, collaborating, creating sites online for the whole world to see.
However web 2.0 isn't quite that simple, it's still up for huge debate on what it even is, is it useful and how should we use it?
Tim O'Reily was a leading advocate when it came to creating the phrase Web 2.0. He began with a conference to explain what is 2.0 and what is coming next for it.
He created a 'meme' to show this (and no, it's not what you and I would usually call a meme!):
Alongside this, he shows us the progression of Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 through examples:
Web 1.0 | Web 2.0 | |
---|---|---|
DoubleClick | --> | Google AdSense |
Ofoto | --> | Flickr |
Akamai | --> | BitTorrent |
mp3.com | --> | Napster |
Britannica Online | --> | Wikipedia |
personal websites | --> | blogging |
evite | --> | upcoming.org and EVDB |
domain name speculation | --> | search engine optimization |
page views | --> | cost per click |
screen scraping | --> | web services |
publishing | --> | participation |
content management systems | --> | wikis |
directories (taxonomy) | --> | tagging ("folksonomy") |
stickiness | --> | syndication |
With all of this in mind, I decided to create a small map of my own, looking at what I believe to be the pro's and con's of web 2.0:
As you can see, there are more pro's to con's as I do believe web 2.0 is a great tool that we all use in our day to day lives. It has allowed us to expand on our knowledge and gives us the opportunity to not only learn through web 2.0, but to share our findings with other people.

Really like the approach to this topic and the mapping - a bit hard to read words of image - how we use technology and online communication is definitely a part of what we do - is there a link to the website you mentioned? any authors of the quote? like the idea of your research esp as you discover and explore topic... title professional of blog just needs a bit of proofing - a woman of my own heart - I have been a digital scholar for a while but still go back and edit quite a lot... you can always come back and add to topics of blogs as you need.
